Personal Web Pages: My Space And FaceBook

By:

Published: November 3, 2006

Do you know me?  Do you know who I am?  Well, if you don’t, here is my personal Web page where you can look up my name, address, phone number (home, work and mobile), social security number, birth date and place, parents’ names and address(es), siblings names and addresses, genetic profile, blood type, sperm count, etc…

No, you may not do a criminal background check on me!  I am, after all, very private.

In this new century, if there is anything you want to know about any particular individual, just go on the Internet and look him or her up.  It’s that easy!  But be warned—there are a lot of freaks out there…and they all have Facebook or MySpace personal Web pages.

Personal Web pages have become the haven for deviants. That’s right!  No more endlessly stalking a victim on foot, watching his or her every move, pretending to look for your “lost dog” at dog parks. And, besides, with today’s fuel prices, you can save money keeping that navy blue service van with the blackened windows safely in the garage, instead of slowly rolling up on that unsuspecting young thing in the tight white shorts.

Personal Web pages are the tool of the lazy criminal, allowing him or her to safely menace society from the confines of home.

One of the many personal Web page services allowing users to place personal information (or otherwise) on the Internet is Facebook. Started in February of 2004, Facebook boasts “over 10 million” who have registered Web pages—personal and public.

A personal Web page, via Facebook, will display any information you want to post, as well as blogging features, national and regional events and topical forums. Facebook supplies personal Web pages “that facilitate the spread of information through social networks allowing people to share information online the same way they do in the real world.” Yes, because, when I’m in public social settings, I usually like to introduce myself as “Freek4UrLuv” and divulge my erotic tastes in pork by-products…

And while we are on the subject of getting too personal with personal Web pages, we cannot leave out the purveying penultimate.

Allow me to get all up in your space for a minute about MySpace.

With a MySpace personal Web page, you can offend and/or titillate from afar and, yet, oh so near. Unfortunately, “MySpace is for everyone”—even people who would just like to have an intelligent conversation with another human being while keeping their clothing on (shudder to think!).

MySpace give a neat little list of some of the activities that may be conducted over a personal Web page:

•    Friends who want to talk Online (sure…”talk”)
•    Single people who want to meet other Singles (without their spouses knowing)
•    Matchmakers who want to connect their friends with other friends (because they want everyone else to be as “happy” as they are)
•    Families who want to keep in touch (but never actually touch)—map your Family Tree (and hang yourself from it)
•    Business people and co-workers interested in networking (The Cheetah Club won’t accept the flex-spend account)
•    Classmates and study partners (and they can use it ten years later, too, to show off the new plastic surgery they got!)
•    Anyone looking for long lost friends! (ibid)

However, what I find most interesting about MySpace, a personal Web page service offering classifieds, comedy, music, videos, events, blog and film, is the safety tips feature. Considering MySpace’s recent reputation, wouldn’t safety tips on this personal Web page service be the equivalent of an armless warrior in a sword fight?  What’s the weapon of demise? A sharp wit?

Despite all the cynicism that can be imposed on personal Web pages, they can be useful and socially gratifying tools. Personal Web pages provide companies with a medium for advertisement, growth and even profitability. At the same time, individuals may find personal Web pages to be the perfect tools for enhancing an already healthy and active social life.

Still, I can’t help but wonder what would have become of yesterday’s serial killers if they had been privy to today’s technology. If only Ted Bundy or Aileen Wournos had had a personal Web page! Then, those co-eds and johns could have been stalked faster. Efficiency is proficiency.
